In the dead of night
In your oldest clothes
Creeping out yuh house
With your friends
To join the people and the trucks and
The buckets
Of mud
Of molasses
Of paint
Of cocoa.
On
The
Streets
After the kaiso monarchy sing
And the regal costumes done judge
Before the sun rise
And the pretty costumes unfurl
We slather each other joyfully
Skin to skin,
Pasting
Rubbing
Wining
De duttiness in
So that even when you wash dem old clothes
Over and over
4, 5 years later
One likkle faded splash of colour could still take you back
To where
The Mas begins.
